Mildura art deco, then to Griffith

As promised, we spent some of the morning walking around Mildura to look at a selection of art-deco buildings.
This jewellers is on the main road through the town, as is the electrical substation in the following image.

The T&G building in the central business distrcit  is a fine example of the period. We looked in at what is now the Mildura brewery (also a bar and restaurant), which has a fabulous period interior. Unfortunately we were unable to take any photos of that.
Almost immediately opposite the T & G building is the Sandbar, another pub, with a great curved facade.
The last stop we made on the tour is the R.S.L. building, which allowed access to the interior where we could see this stained glass panel in all its glory.
On leaving Mildura we crossed the river into NSW. Their signs are very smart, although we were moving when Karen took the photo.
Lunch consisted of a shared steak sandwitch at  Balranald. Possibly not the most exciting of holiday destinations. Afternoon tea was scones and cream (and coffee of course) in Hay, a rather more attractive and bustling small town.
I had hoped to get to West Wyalong, but it would have meant continuing until after 7pm, and there seems plenty of wildlife best left alone.
Instead, we've arrived in Griffith, another town somewhat larger and busier than I had expected. We were lucky to get amongst the last few beds in town as there are a stack of conventions etc on this weekend.
We stuffed ourselves at the Griffith Leagues Club, which is just over the road from the motel. Unfortunately, our room is at the front of the motel, and the trucks, while supposedly doing only 50km/h, shake the walls and the lampshades each time they pass. This is to say nothing of the local idiots in thier "racing" cars.
So, having acheived Griffith a day later than intended, and so soon into our journey, it means we have more time to catch up again. Tomorrow we'll be at Parkes by lunchtime, just you wait and see.

  1. I am just back from a holiday in Mildura and although the weather was grey and windy, the architectural walks were terrific. I took photos of everything, which will eventually make their way into my blog. Thanks for the link,
